What to do if you find a cane toad in your yard
If you discover a cane toad in your garden, make sure to keep young children and pets away to avoid any risk of contact and poisoning.
The cane toad is considered a pest and a threat to Australia's native wildlife. Nevertheless, even pests should be euthanized humanely. According to current RSPCA guidelines, the most humane way to kill a cane toad is by using the chemical eugenol, found in products like Croaked. When sprayed on toads, it sedates them, rendering them unconscious within a few minutes, and eventually leads to death. Studies show that toads do not experience skin irritation, pain, distress, or internal bleeding from this chemical.
If this product is unavailable, you may consider staged cooling. Place the toad in a labeled bag or container and refrigerate it for 12 hours to induce unconsciousness. After 12 hours, transfer the toad to the freezer for an additional 24 hours. Confirm the toad's death before disposal.
If you suspect your pet has encountered a cane toad, contact your local vet immediately.
