Grass hay should be the high-fiber foundation of every guinea pig’s diet. The fiber in hay supports the crucial digestive health requirements of herbivores like guinea pigs. A daily intake of a uniform, fortified food is recommended to provide essential vitamins and minerals not present in hay. Fresh greens are also a vital part of a guinea pig’s diet, and healthy treats can be advantageous when given sparingly.
Guinea pigs are unique because they require vitamin C in their diet daily. Like humans, guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C in their bodies, so they must consume foods rich in vitamin C or take a daily supplement.
Similar to most herbivores, guinea pigs are natural grazers. They eat throughout the day! Therefore, it’s important to always have fresh hay and grass available.
