Bumblefoot (pododermatitis)
Bumblefoot is an infection affecting the sole of the foot. It begins with slight redness and swelling, but can quickly develop into a large, scabbed wound, with the infection spreading to the joints and bones of the feet.
This condition is caused by a combination of factors: 1) scurvy, 2) poor hygiene in the enclosure, 3) overgrown nails, and 4) wire-floored cages. These factors collectively contribute to breaking the skin on the foot pad, introducing infection, and preventing the guinea pig from healing on its own.
Consult your guinea pig vet to evaluate the severity of the condition and collaborate on an effective treatment plan.
