Mites
Mites are a frequent cause of skin issues in guinea pigs. They lead to irritation, itchiness, fur loss, and guinea pigs may even injure their own skin while scratching. In some instances, these mites can cause your guinea pig to have seizures due to intense scratching. Veterinarians specializing in guinea pigs thoroughly examine the skin and use skin scrapings to identify and diagnose the presence of mites.
These parasites are commonly found on most guinea pigs at any (or all) times, having been transmitted from their mother shortly after birth. They only become a clinical issue when the guinea pig is stressed or has a poor diet.
Treatment involves applying insecticides to the skin every two weeks for a total of three treatments. It is essential to manage stress, diet, and overall health concurrently. Your guinea pig vet is the most qualified person to help and guide you regarding both the mite issue and ongoing care and attention.
